Seeing PCS as an Opportunity to Shepherd and Send Well 

In May, pastors, church planters, and ministry leaders serving in military communities gathered for the Send Network Military Summit. Together, we prayed, encouraged one another, shared best practices, and renewed our commitment to do whatever it takes to evangelize, disciple, and mobilize the military members God has entrusted to our churches.

Military ministry presents unique challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity to reach men and women who will carry the gospel around the world. We left encouraged, united, and committed to advancing the Great Commission through military-focused churches.

Summer marks the start of PCS (Permanent Change of Station) season. Many military families across the country will be packing boxes and preparing for their next assignment. As pastors, our responsibility does not end with a farewell prayer or send-off service. We remain their pastors until they are connected to a healthy local church at their next duty station.

Some questions to ask departing members:

• Do you know exactly where you will be living?
• Have you identified any gospel-preaching churches near your new home?
• Do you already know any Christians, church members, or ministry leaders at your next duty station?
• What unique needs during this PCS can I be praying for?
• Would it be helpful if I recommended a few churches in your new area? (Reach out to us at Send Network Military for assistance.)

Other practical ways to serve:

• Provide meals, childcare, or other logistical help during the packing and moving process.
• Ask what spiritual books, podcasts, or sermons they plan to listen to while traveling.
• Set reminders to call or text 30, 60, and 90 days after their move to check in and pray with them.
• Encourage small group leaders and church friends to stay connected after the move.
• Once they have selected a church, personally contact the receiving pastor to help connect with and care for the family.

Military moves create both disruption and opportunity. Don’t stop at the send-off. Help families arrive well, connect quickly, and thrive spiritually in their new community.

One of the greatest gifts we can give a military family is ensuring they are faithfully shepherded until they are firmly rooted in their next church home.
